Wicked, drum circles, roller blading in central park....

This past week has been rather eventful. We finished sketching murals at all of the participating schools in NY Cares day. The day of the event, Saturday, was a success. More than 100 schools were painted, gardened, organized, and just plain LOVED. Community residents came out, students, parents, but mostly just caring New Yorkers not even from that borough...committed for that day to beautifying the face and environment of their assigned school. AmeriCorps' job on saturday was to cheerlead the sites, fill in as Site Captains where needed, register volunteers, create any last minute murals, and top secretly escort monetary donations back to the office! It was a great day!! And now that this major event is over, we will be assiting NY Cares with their annual Winter Wishes program. We will be organizing all of the letters that come in and redistributing them where necessary. I think we'll be reading a lot...just a hunch..

So on Friday night, my mate Dan put his name in for two tix at the nightly 'Wicked' lottery. Amid the other 100 or more people he wasn't feeling hopeful...but low and behold he got tickets!! So I tagged along with him. We were front row...complete with spit dabbles from the singing ensembles! And to think our tickets only cost $26. It was pretty awesome, not gonna lie. Here is the website if you don't know about the craze: http://www.wickedthemusical.com/

Currently, I'm back at the NY Public Library checking the mail. Chelsea and I just got back from volunteering at a drum circle in the NYU Med Center Psych ward. It was intimate, close quarters banging instruments with varying age adults in this 7-10 day treatment facility. Some were musical, some were not, some were old, some my age, some looked like professionals, djs, students, gramas, mothers, and some could be in there for dangerous things...it didn't matter. We were able to make melodies for one hour together. Some smiles and laughs were shared, not a lot of talking..and then it was over. Never gonna see them again. But it was a very revealing experience. I am so glad I was able to be there.

A cold front has moved in...the past few days have been CHILLY in NYC. Memphis and I bought roller blades at the Good Will thrift yesterday and went roller blading around central park. What fun! We know of a Skate/Dance Party every weekend in the park from 2-6 with a dj spinning beats. All kinds of people come out to move or just show off...but its fun. We caught the tail end yesterday but for sure will be there next weekend. Hopefully it warms up a bit. :) Wishful thinking..

Well it's about 28 days until I'm home.

Love and hugs and kisses!
Becca
