I'm a roofer...

Recently, I've been going back and forth with the question of, why are we rebuilding down here when it's going to most likely happen again? History, geographically speaking, will probably repeat itself. I just hope that the volunteer efforts down here are not in vain. The people just NEED our help because they refuse to leave. This is home, they have lived here for generations and they want to die here. I would probably want the same thing if I was in their shoes. BUT then, the other day, I heard this cool thing: officials are creating pre-fab homes that FLOAT!! Can you believe it? That made me feel better, knowing that they are taking the future of New Orleans into consideration while still fixing the current problem of substandard housing.

This week has been good so far. We are still trying the different areas of the house building process and I have been learning the trades of roofing and exterior work (siding and trim). My nose is red! It's warm out on the roof, but to our benefit the days have been overcast and breezy. Duane, our Supervisor with Habitat, is a cool guy. He always, says "build the house with your mouth" meaning we should be delegating tasks to our volunteers and not so much doing the hammering ourselves. With that, today wasn't hands on at all...it kinda felt long. But that is our role in this project: to facilitate.
Two of my teammates were called onto the disaster squad yesterday going to Georgia where the tornadoes messed some things up. I am a tid-bit jealous!

Spring break, or another way of saying 4-day weekend,:) starts on Friday. My sister Julie is coming to see me and I cannot wait. We're gonna stay in the city and do all the touristy stuff. :) I'm so excited to see a familiar face!

love and hugs,
becca
